Architecture kindles an awareness of presence, sparking an admiration for the magical yet transient qualities of the real world. At the same time, to appreciate the space that surrounds us demands a contemplative strategy of perception.
HAVEN continues the pursuit of architecture that brings awareness and appreciation towards the imperfection and impermanence of the real world. Nestled on the edge of Mud Lake in Ottawa, Ontario, the proposal offers spaces for rest, shelter, and observation. The warming hut utilizes the versatility of wood as a medium for demonstrating how the synthesis of materiality, atmosphere, and time is capable of igniting the contemplative energy required of reading the space around us. It is a portrayal of architecture that incites and amplifies the awareness of presence (and absence) and the appreciation for the details of one’s surroundings and one’s self.
A 1:20 physical model was crafted entirely of wood, much of which was charred to achieve spaces with a transformed and charged sense of atmosphere.
